The temple is regarded as one of Kerala's oldest continuously worshipped Shiva shrines. Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Vaikkathappan, and the temple is closely associated with the sacred trio of Shiva temples at Vaikom, Ettumanoor, and Kaduthuruthy, which devotees traditionally visit on the same day before the noon Ucha Pooja. The temple also occupies an important place in Kerala's social history because of its connection with the Vaikom movement that helped pave the way for broader temple entry reforms.
Believed to be over 1,500 years old, making it one of Kerala's oldest and most revered Shiva temples.
The temple is associated with the historic Vaikom Satyagraha, an important movement against caste-based discrimination.
